Andrelton Simmons to be Placed on Disabled List

The Atlanta Braves announced today that rookie shortstop Andrelton Simmons will be placed on the 15-day disabled list after injuring the small (pinky) finger on his right hand yesterday at Philadelphia.

Today Dr. Gary Lourie examined Simmons and confirmed that he has a non-displaced fracture of the fifth metacarpal in his right hand. Simmons’ hand will be placed in a cast for four weeks. Once the cast is removed he will be re-evaluated to determine the next phase of treatment. No timetable for his return has been set.

Named the National League’s Rookie of the Month for June, the 22-year-old Simmons is batting .296 (34-for-115) with 13 runs scored, three home runs, seven doubles and 15 RBIs in 33 games for the Braves.  Since making his debut on June 2, he has posted 10 multi-hit games and has played stellar defense.

Selected by Atlanta in the second round (70th overall) of the 2010 First-Year Player Draft, Simmons became the first Braves player from the 2010 draft class to reach the majors.

A corresponding roster move will not be announced until at least Thursday (July 12).  The Braves open the second half of the 2012 season on Friday (July 13) against the New York Mets (7:35 p.m.).

Chris Brown Accepts Challenge to Fight Drake Over Rihanna!

Alki David, CEO of FilmOn.TV Networks and Celebrity boxing promoter Damon Feldman have released a joint statement regarding Chris Brown’s agreement to enter the ring against Drake that was caught on camera by
rumorfix.com.

When asked if he would participate in the fight, Brown said, “Yeah, I would. I would.” Brown’s acceptance of the boxing opportunity comes after David offered to pay the winner of the fight $9 Million Dollars and the loser wins $1 Million.

“We are very excited at FilmOn.TV that Chris Brown has accepted to fight his nemesis,” said David. “Should Drake accept the $ 10 Million Dollar challenge to go toe to toe for three rounds against Chris Brown, both fighters will
be put through training leading up to the Las Vegas event in September. They will be trained by iconic names in professional Boxing history.”

In a press conference on June 29, 2012, the Billionaire Media Mogul was set to make an offer to Chris Brown and Drake and surprised everyone by increasing his initial offer from $1 Million Dollars each of the stars to $10,000,000; the loser of the fight will receive $1 Million and $9 million will be awarded to the winner. The winner is encouraged to donate a portion of the purse to the charity of their choice.

This is the most phenomenal purse in celebrity boxing history. If there is no clear winner the audience will vote online at [www.FilmOn.TV] the web based interactive site where the event will be streamed alongside
the televised pay-per-view event.

“I want these guys to settle their fight started at that nightclub in New York over pop star Rhianna and have something good come out of it,” said David.

IFAB Makes Three Unanimous Historic Decisions

The International Football Association Board (IFAB) convened at the Home of FIFA in Zurich today, 5 July 2012, for a Special Meeting under the chairmanship of FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter.

The first item on the agenda was goal-line technology (GLT). Following the conclusion of a nine-month test process that began in August 2011, led by EMPA (Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology), the IFAB unanimously decided to approve in principle both companies that took part in Test Phase 2: GoalRef and Hawk-Eye. This approval is subject to a final installation test at each stadium before the systems can be used in “real” football matches, in accordance with the FIFA Quality Programme for GLT.

The IFAB was keen to stress that technology will only be utilised for the goal line and for no other areas of the game.

Revisions to the wording of specific Laws of the Game will now consequently be made, relating to: Law 1 (The Field of Play); Law 2 (The Ball); Law 5 (The Referee); and Law 10 (The Method of Scoring).

The second decision of the IFAB concerned additional assistant referees (AAR) following a two-year experiment in the UEFA Champions League, Europa League and EURO 2012, as well as the AFC President’s Cup and competitions in Brazil, France, Morocco and Qatar.

Following a presentation by the AAR Experiment Coordinator, Donald McVicar, the IFAB again unanimously agreed that the use of two additional assistant referees be approved, acknowledging the support they can provide in officiating football matches.

As a result of this decision, an amendment will be made to the Laws of the Game, with a separate section concerning additional assistant referees. It was also approved that communication equipment be permitted between match officials in the Laws of the Game.

The third main topic for discussion concerned Law 4 – The Players’ Equipment, and specifically the “headscarf”.

The IFAB agreed to unanimously approve – temporarily during a trial period – the wearing of headscarves. The design, colour and material permitted will be defined and confirmed following the IFAB Annual Business Meeting in Glasgow in October.

Currently there is no medical literature concerning injuries as a result of wearing a headscarf, and therefore the decision taken today will be reviewed at the IFAB Annual General Meeting in 2014.

In other matters, the IFAB confirmed that the Annual Business Meeting will further discuss the issue of “triple punishment”, currently detailed in Law 12 (Fouls and Misconduct; Sending-off Offences), and also agreed to discuss further how the IFAB can improve consultation with the game.

The decisions concerning the Laws of the Game taken today regarding GLT and AAR by the IFAB will come into effect immediately.

The 127th Annual General Meeting will take place in Edinburgh, Scotland on 1-2 March 2013.

More information on the GLT Quality Programme, including videos, Q&As and more information on the test manual and licensing procedure, can be found at: www.FIFA.com/QUALITY.

The undefeated 6′ 9″ Fury (18-0, 13 KOs), fighting out of Cheshire, UK, is the reigning Irish heavyweight champion, who is rated No. 6 by the World Boxing Council (“WBC”). The charismatic 24-year-old giant has defeated four previously unbeaten opponents – Dereck Chisora (14-0), Neven Pajkic (16-0), Marcelo Luiz Nascimento (13-0) and Rich Power (12-0) – in his last seven fights.

Maddalone played the role of gatekeeper in the heavyweight division having fought world champions Evander Holyfield, Tomasz Adamek, Jean Marc Mormeck and Al “Ice” Cole during his 13-year professional boxing career.

Maddalone is coming off multiple wins by technical knockout including against Chris Koval (TKO4) and Mike Sheppard (TKO1). Maddalone is promoted by Joe DeGuardia’s Star Boxing.

Mike Trout voted American League Rookie of the Month for June

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim outfielder Mike Trout has been voted American League Rookie of the Month for June. This marks the second consecutive monthly rookie honor for Trout, who also received the May honors. Trout becomes the first Angels rookie to win in consecutive months and the first A.L. rookie to accomplish the feat since Detroit Tigers outfielder Brennan Boesch in 2010 (May and June).

Trout batted .372 (42-for-113) with seven doubles, one triple, three home runs, 16 RBI, 27 runs scored and 14 stolen bases in 26 games. Among Major League players with a minimum of 81 plate appearances, the Vineland, New Jersey native finished first in hits, runs scored and stolen bases, was second behind Cincinnati’s Joey Votto in batting average and was fourth in the A.L. in on-base percentage (.419). Among Major League rookies, the 20-year-old led the way in at-bats, runs, hits, batting average, on-base percentage, and slugging percentage (.531), was tied for first in doubles, tied for second in RBI and was fifth in walks. In addition, Trout led all Major Leaguers with 30 hits, 21 runs and 15 stolen bases in Interleague play. In a three-game set with the Texas Rangers to begin the month, Trout recorded a trio multi-hit games, batting .462 (6-for-13) with a double, triple, four RBI and two runs scored to help the Angels take two-of-three from the A.L. West-leading Rangers. On June 4th, the Angels’ first round pick in the 2009 First-Year Player Draft (25th overall) collected a career-high four hits, including a double, two RBI and a run scored, but the Angels dropped an 8-6 decision to the Seattle Mariners at Angel Stadium. In his first trip to Coors Field from June 8th-10th, the speedy Trout went a combined 8-for-14 (.571) in the series, including a pair of three-hit games, with eight runs scored to lead the Angels to a sweep of Colorado. In his first 10 games of June, the right-handed-hitting Trout hit a blistering .500 (21-for-42) with three doubles, one triple, one homer, 10 RBI and 14 runs scored, and was 7-for-8 in stolen bases to help the Halos to a 7-3 mark over the span. On June 19th against the San Francisco Giants, Trout again collected four hits, which included two doubles and four runs scored, as part of a 14-hit Angels attack as they defeated the Giants, 12-5, in Anaheim. Trout became the first Angels rookie since David Eckstein in 2001 to tally a pair of four-hit games in a season. On June 27th, Trout dazzled both on offense and defense as the Angels downed the Orioles, 13-1, in Baltimore. Trout went 4-for-6 with three runs scored on the night, and robbed J.J. Hardy of a first-inning home run with a leaping catch over the center field wall. Trout, who became the seventh-youngest position player in A.L. history to earn a spot in the Midsummer Classic on July 10th in Kansas City, currently leads the league in batting average (.339) and stolen bases (22) and is fourth in on-base percentage (.395).

Others receiving votes included Boston’s Will Middlebrooks (.288, 4 HR, 16 RBI, 12 R); Oakland’s Yoenis Cespedes (.343, 4 HR, 14 RBI) and Jarrod Parker (3-1, 2.18 ERA, 32 SO); and Robbie Ross (1-0, 0.00 ERA in 10 appearances) of the Rangers. In recognition of his American League Rookie of the Month Award, Mike Trout will receive a specially designed trophy, suitably engraved, for his accomplishment.
