Andrelton Simmons voted National League Rookie of the Month for June

Atlanta Braves shortstop Andrelton Simmons has been voted National League Rookie of the Month for June. It marks the fifth consecutive season that a Braves player has won rookie honors. The others include Jair Jurrjens (June 2008), Tommy Hanson (June 2009), Jason Heyward (April and May 2010), Craig Kimbrel (June and August 2011) and Freddie Freeman (July 2011).

In 25 June contests, Simmons hit .333 (30-for-90) with six doubles, three home runs and 14 RBI. The 22-year-old ranked among N.L. rookie leaders in nearly every offensive category, placing first in batting average, on-base percentage (.365) and hits. Simmons had the second-highest rookie slugging percentage (.522), tied for second in RBI, tied for third in doubles, tied for sixth in home runs and tied for seventh in runs scored (10). Since his Major League debut on June 2nd, the Mundo Nobo, Curaçao native has started at shortstop in 26 games for the Braves, leading the Club with 10 multi-hit games in that span. The youngster hit safely in 17 of his first 25 Major League contests and notched five multi-RBI games in his first calendar month. On June 30th, Simmons went 3-for-4, matching his career high in hits (done three times), with an RBI and a run scored in a 7-5 victory over the N.L. East-leading Washington Nationals. On June 22nd, Atlanta’s second round pick in the 2010 First- Year Player Draft contributed a key two-run double in a 4-1 Interleague victory over the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park. Simmons, who is the first player from the Braves’ 2010 Draft class to reach the Majors, clubbed his first career home run on June 9th off Toronto’s Drew Hutchison, exactly two years to the day after signing with the organization. Simmons collected his first career hit on June 3rd in his second Major League game, hitting a second-inning double off Washington’s Gio Gonzalez. Prior to his call-up, Simmons was hitting .292 (50-for-171) with three homers and 21 RBI in 43 games with Double-A Mississippi. This is his first career monthly honor.

Other rookies receiving votes included Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper (.274, 29 H, 6 2B, 4 HR, 11 RBI, 6 SB, .336 OBP) and outfielder/first baseman Tyler Moore (.425, 17 H, 4 HR, 11 RBI, .800 SLG, .521 OBP); Colorado catcher Wilin Rosario (.265, 22 H, 4 2B, 6 HR, 17 RBI, .520 SLG, 14 R); Milwaukee backstop Martin Maldonado (.274, 20 H, 5 HR, 14 RBI, .493 SLG, .338 OBP) and pitcher Michael Fiers (2-2, 2.51 ERA, 38 SO, 32.1 IP); Arizona starting pitcher and 2012 N.L. All-Star Wade Miley (3-3, 3.46 ERA, 34 SO, 41.2 IP); and Houston pitchers Lucas Harrell (3-2, 3.63 ERA, 24 SO, 34.2 IP) and Dallas Keuchel (1-0, 1.35 ERA, 8 SO, 20.0 IP). The National League Rookie of the Month for June 2012, Andrelton Simmons, will receive a specially designed trophy, suitably engraved, to commemorate his performance.

Andrew McCutchen named the National League Player of the Month for June

Pittsburgh Pirates center fielder Andrew McCutchen, who was named to the 2012 N.L. All-Star squad on Sunday, has been voted the Budweiser Presents National League Player of the Month for June. Budweiser, the official beer sponsor of Major League Baseball and sponsor for 23 of 30 MLB clubs, is also the presenting sponsor of the American League Player of the Month Award.

In 27 games during June, McCutchen hit .370 (40-for-108), the third-highest batting average among qualifying Major Leaguers and the second-best in the National League, and his 73 total bases were tied with Robinson Cano for the most in the Majors. His 40 hits led the N.L. while his 26 RBI ranked second and his seven home runs were tied for third. McCutchen, who will make his second consecutive Midsummer Classic appearance in Kansas City, recorded the league’s fourth-best slugging percentage (.732) and sixth-highest on-base percentage (.420), while his 19 runs scored tied for sixth. In addition, the Fort Mead, Florida native added four stolen bases to his monthly totals. On June 29th, McCutchen tied a season high with four hits, going 4-for-5 with a double, a home run, three RBI and four runs scored in a 14-5 victory over the N.L. Central-rival St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium. On June 21st, McCutchen went 3-for-4 with a double, a triple and three RBI in a 9-1 win over the Minnesota Twins at PNC Park. During Interleague play, McCutchen hit .368 (21-for-57) with four doubles, three home runs, eight runs scored and 12 RBI in a span of 15 games against American League opponents from June 8th-24th. The 11th overall pick in the 2005 First-Year Player Draft began June with a six-game hitting streak and reached base safely in 25 of 27 contests last month. Among N.L. center fielders, McCutchen ranks first in batting average (.346), home runs (15), RBI (51), on-base percentage (.401) and slugging percentage (.593) this season. Among all N.L. players, he ranks fifth in hitting and his 166 total bases rank fourth overall. This is the first monthly award for the 25-year-old and the first by a Pirate since Jason Bay won in May 2006.

Other players receiving votes included Arizona’s Aaron Hill (.370, 37 H, 9 2B, 6 HR, 20 RBI, 16 R, .700 SLG, .402 OBP), who hit for the cycle two times during the month, and Paul Goldschmidt (.341, 9 2B, 7 HR, 16 RBI, .732 SLG); Cincinnati’s Joey Votto (.392, 38 H, 11 2B, 6 HR, 18 RBI, 20 R, .691 SLG, .487 OBP); Milwaukee’s Ryan Braun (.319, 30 H, 8 HR, 19 RBI, 15 R, .617 SLG, .390 OBP); Ike Davis (.264, 8 2B, 16 R, 6 HR, 24 RBI, .363 OBP) of the New York Mets; and Atlanta’s Jason Heyward (.348, 31 H, 9 2B, 6 HR, 15 RBI, 18 R, .674 SLG, .379 OBP). The Budweiser Presents National League Player of the Month, Andrew McCutchen, will receive a specially designed trophy, suitably engraved, in recognition of his accomplishment.

Jose Bautista named the American League Player of the Month for June

Toronto Blue Jays slugger Jose Bautista has been voted the Budweiser Presents American League Player of the Month for June. Budweiser, the official beer sponsor of Major League Baseball and sponsor of 23 of 30 clubs, is also the presenting sponsor of the National League Player of the Month Award.

Bautista batted .271 (26-for-96) with four doubles, 14 home runs, 30 RBI, 22 walks and 24 runs scored in 27 games during June to capture his fifth career monthly award. Jose previously took home honors in July and August 2010 and April and May 2011. Among Major League leaders with at least 81 plate appearances, the 31-year-old finished tops in homers, RBI and slugging percentage (.750), tied for first in walks and extra-base hits (18) and tied for third in runs scored and total bases (72). His 14 homers established a new Club record for the most hit in any single month and it marked the most hit in a calendar month by any player since Colorado’s Troy Tulowitzki hit 15 round trippers in September 2010. It also was the most for an A.L. player since New York’s Alex Rodriguez hit 14 home runs in April 2007. Since 2010, Bautista has led the Majors with 123 home runs, including a Major League-best 81 first-half homers. After hitting just three homers in April, the right-handed hitting Bautista found his stroke in May and has totaled 23 homers with 35 walks, 52 RBI and 44 runs scored over a two-month string through the end of June. On June 19th, the nine-year veteran enjoyed his 17th career multi-homer game, and his first since May 11th at Minnesota, as part of a 2-for-4 effort with three runs scored to lead Toronto past the Milwaukee Brewers, 10-9, in an Interleague showdown at Miller Park. For the second time in the game, this time in the top of the ninth inning, Bautista followed a Colby Rasmus homer with one of his own as the Blue Jays came back to claim their first win in Wisconsin since the 1996 season. Three days later on June 22nd, the Dominican Republic native singled, homered, walked twice and scored three runs to help the Jays top the Miami Marlins, 12-5, in Miami. Rounding out the month, the 20th round draft pick in the 2000 First-Year Player Draft (by Pittsburgh) established a new career milestone with a run-scoring single in the second inning of Toronto’s June 30th contest with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim to register his 500th career RBI. Bautista, who will be making his third All-Star appearance and second consecutive start on July 10th in Kansas City, currently leads the Majors in homers (26), ranks second in RBI (63), is tied for fourth in runs scored (56) and tied for fifth in walks (51).

Others receiving votes included New York’s Robinson Cano (.340, 11 HR, 21 RBI); A.L. Rookie of the Month Mike Trout (.372, 7 2B, 3 HR, 16 RBI, 14 SB) of the Angels; Trevor Plouffe (.327, 11 HR, 21 RBI) of the Twins; and Kansas City’s Alex Gordon (.340, 11 2B, .509 SLG). In recognition for his Budweiser Presents American League Player of the Month Award, Jose Bautista will receive a specially designed trophy, suitably engraved, for his accomplishment.

Ruiz Back in Action July 7 in Mexico

On July 7 in La Paz, Baja California Sur, Mexico, promoter Sampson Lewkowicz and his company, Sampson Boxing, in association with Promosiones Del Pueblo, HG Boxing and ECO Boxing, will proudly present Mexico’s Hugo “Cuatito” Ruiz (30-1, 27 KOs) defending his WBA Interim Bantamweight title against Jean Sampson (12-1, 7 KOs) of Nicaragua.

Sponsored by Grupo Modelo and broadcast by Televisa on its Sabado de Corona Boxing series, the 12-round fight will mark the third time 25-year-old Ruiz has defended the interim belt he won from Francisco Arce in May of last year.

22-year-old Sampson is coming off a huge win over former two-time world champion Rosendo Alvarez in May of this year.

“I had an excellent training camp with my whole family, my trainer/father Heriberto Ruiz and my twin brothers, Edel and Heriberto Jr,” said Ruiz. “I need to be in top shape because I am waiting for Koki Kameda to recuperate from his injury, so I can unify the titles.”

Manager Fernando Dominguez added that he cannot wait for his charge to face quality challengers like Nonito Donaire or Abner Mares, while Lewkowicz said he is proud of his young fighter. “Hugo gets better with every fight and will soon get the attention of a major American network because of his ability as a boxer and puncher.”

Lennox Allen vs. Michael Walker

Undefeated super-middleweight prospect, Lennox Allen (15-0-1, 9 KOs) returns to the ring on July 14, 2012, and faces rugged veteran, Michael Walker (19-14-3, 12 KOs) in a 6-round bout at Rivers Casino in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Having captured the vacant WBC Caribbean Boxing Federation (CABOFE) super middleweight title against Kwesi Jones (9-2, 5 KOs) in his last bout, Allan will look to shake off the ring rust as it’s been over a year since he’s last fought.

“I’m eager to get back in the ring and march toward title contention after being out of the ring for so long,” said Lennox. “Michael Walker brings a lot of experience to the ring and he’s fought some very good fighters.  This will be a good challenge for me and I’ve trained very hard to be successful in this fight.  It’s been a long layoff but I’m confident in my ability to come out on top.  I’m ready to perform at a high level.”

“I want to thank my promoter Mario Yagobi and Boxing 360 for staying by my side when I was out.  I’m hoping I can fight a few more times by the end of this year and get back on track.  My goal of becoming a world champion is attainable and I’m going to work very hard to achieve that goal!

“Lennox is a good fighter with a lot of talent but he’s had a few bumps in his career,” said Yagobi. “I’m looking to keep him busy and get him in a big fight very soon.  I want him to fight a couple of more times so he can get accustomed to fighting on a regular basis.  He’ll be ready to fight for a regional title by early next year.”

Art Hovhannisyan vs. Miguel Acosta

Gary Shaw Productions in association with Thompson Boxing Promotions will bring another exciting night of professional boxing to the Chumash Resort Casino in Santa Ynez, Calif., on July 20, when undefeated Armenian, Art Hovhannisyan (14-0-2, 8 KOs) and Venezuelan, Miguel Acosta (29-5-2, 23 KOs) fight in the 10-round main event. The lightweight bout will be televised live on ShoBox: The New Generation (SHOWTIME® 11 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast).

Known for having power in both hands, Hovhannisyan boosts an undefeated record and a great chin as he’s never hit the canvas as a professional or amateur.  In his last fight against former world champion, Cristobal Cruz (39-13-3, 23 KOs), an accidental head butt stopped their bout after a cut over Cruz’s right eye was deemed too bad to continue from the referee.  Hovhannisyan will look to rebound with a victory and move up the rankings.

“Acosta was on his way to beating Brandon Rios until he ran out of gas,” Hovhannisyan said. “Everyone knows he can fight at the championship level so when I beat him, I too will be considered viable at the championship level.  A win against Acosta gets me closer to that world title shot.”

“If Hovhannisyan catches Acosta on that chin it’s good night,” promoter Gary Shaw said. “Acosta is very skilled and has a fun style the fans will enjoy. This is another great fight that SHOWTIME is binging to the fans.  Hovhannisyan punches hard and the fans are going to see some fireworks.”

Acosta is a proven warrior that comes to fight every time he steps in the ring.  Having victories against three previously undefeated fighters gives Acosta confidence in his ability to come out victorious.

“I’ve been in this situation before, fighting an undefeated fighter with all his fans attending,” Acosta said.  “What they don’t realize is that I’m going to spoil the party.  Hovhannisyan is a good fighter, but he’s not on that championship level.  I’m motivated to end his unbeaten streak.  The fans will see great action in this fight.”

Light middleweights headline the eight-round co-main event that feature’s Philadelphia’s unbeaten rising star, Julian “J-Rock” Williams (9-0-1, 4 KOs) against Nevada’s Said El Harrak (10-2, 5 KOs).  Williams, known for his great boxing skills, wants to let the fans know he’s the real deal.

“I come to fight every time I step in the ring,” Williams said. “I’m going to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity fighting on ShoBox.  I want to thank Gary Shaw for believing in me and I promise to put on a great show.”

The rest of the undercard: Talented undefeated prospect, Roman Morales (10-0, 6 KOs), of San Ardo, Calif.,  faces Alexis Santiago (11-2-1 5 KOs), of Phoenix, Ariz., in an eight-round super bantamweight bout; local fan favorite Ruffino Serrano (12-4), of nearby Santa Maria, Calif., will fight for the first-ever Central Coast Title against Seattle’s Rob Diezel (8-4, 3 KOs) in an eight-round featherweight contest; Chumash Resort Casino hometown hero, lightweight Francisco Santana (12-3-1, 6 KOs), of Santa Barbara, Calif., will face an opponent to be announced and undefeated lightweight Jonathan Maicelo (16-0, 9 KOs) and featherweight Roy Tapia (3-0-1, 2 KOs) are also slated to meet opponents to be announced.

Tickets priced $35, $45, $55, $70, and $85 are on sale and can be purchased at the Chumash Resort Casino Box office or online at www.startickets.com.

Euro 2012 Breaks All-time Audience Record

Nearly 1.3 million visitors watched the group and quarter final matches of EURO 2012. The stadiums of the championship co-hosts Poland and Ukraine saw the combined number of 1,274,186 football fans over the fortnight. According to the tournament director in Ukraine Markian Lubkivskyi, the average attendance at the stadiums reached 98 percent.

European football championship first attracted over a million of viewers in 1996, when matches in the UK were visited by over 1.27 million people. This number used to be the highest attendance figure for EURO until 2012.

One may indicate a significant turnout increase over the history of the tournament, as the first UEFA European football championship, held in 1960 in France, unfolded in front of the eyes of almost 79,000 fans. EURO 2004 in Portugal was witnessed by nearly 1.16 million people, while the latest EURO 2008, co-hosted by Austria and Switzerland, drew in 1.14 million football lovers, reports Champion.com.ua.

The remaining three EURO 2012 matches will take place at the tournament’s largest arenas – the National Stadium in Warsaw (capacity – over 58 thousand), Donbass Arena in Donetsk (over 50 thousand capacity), and Kyiv’s NSK Olimpiyskyi (70 thousand)*. It is expected that the total audience of EURO 2012 will reach 1.4 million people.

Notably, Ukraine prepared four stadiums for the European Football Championship – the National Sports Complex Olimpiyskyi in Kyiv (will host EURO 2012 final), Donbass Arena in Donetsk, Arena Lviv in Lviv, and Metalist Stadium (nicknamed Spider) in Kharkiv. As a result of renovation, Olimpiyskyi became the second largest stadium in Eastern Europe capable of hosting up to 70,050 guests. Stadium in Lviv was built specially for the championship.

According to UEFA, EURO 2012 fan zones in the eight host cities also experienced notable turnout. The attendance leader among the eight fan zones is the one in Kyiv – as of June 20th, 1.19 million football fans visited the area since its opening. Reportedly, the largest and loudest EURO 2012 fan zone at Warsaw’s Plac Defilad was attended by 820 thousand fans.

Total fan zone attendance as of June 20th equals 4.241 million, with Polish fan zones attracting almost 1.8 million visitors and Ukrainian – nearly 2.5 million.

Gary Shaw Responds To Tarver’s Positive Drug Test

Promoter Gary Shaw is concerned about the damage done in the sport of boxing after the news Friday that Antonio Tarver tested positive for a banned substance in a pre-fight drug test conducted by the California State Athletic Commission before his fight with Lateef Kayode.

“It’s very worrisome where our sport is heading these days with the recent array of fighters testing positive for banned substances,” Shaw said. “With all these fights being canceled its killing the sport and I hope the networks are not going to lose interest.  As promoters, we do our best to make sure everyone is abiding by the rules.  I’m happy that the commissions are stepping up their stance on catching fighters cheating because the safety of the fighter should always come first.

“It’s unfortunate that in Lateef Kayode’s first major opportunity, he had to fight on what appears to be an unlevel playing field.  I have a lot of respect for Antonio Tarver and would be very disappointed to find out that he knowingly took performance enhancing drugs.  It is my hope that Tarver requests that the B sample will be tested and will show that Tarver was clean.  However if the sample comes back dirty, then the commission should take appropriate action. It was a very close fight as it was ruled a split draw, but now that we have been informed by the California State Athletic Commission about the alleged drug use, I’ll have to talk to Lateef and his management team to see what we’ll do to resolve this matter.

“In addition, the horrible scoring by the judges, the excessive use of PED’s, and the inability of promoters working together, is only going to kill this sport,” Shaw continued. “Something needs to be done and major changes need to be made, and the time is now. The boxing business is getting worse by the day and we are losing fans by the minute.  Boxing has been around longer than any other sport and we must keep the integrity of the game pure. I implore the commissions around the United States to take severe action against any fighter who doesn’t abide by the commissions’ standards.  We need a strict drug testing policy to rid the sport of those that don’t want to play by the rules, and we need more competent judges.”
